Your Fall Home Maintenance Checklist
With cooler weather on the way, now is the perfect time to get your home ready for the season. A little effort this fall can save you stress (and repair bills) later.
Here’s a simple checklist to guide you:
Outdoors
- Clear gutters & downspouts – Keep water flowing freely to prevent leaks and ice buildup.
- Check the roof – Look for loose or missing shingles before snow arrives.
- Turn off outdoor water – Drain hoses and shut off exterior faucets to avoid frozen pipes.
- Yard work – Rake leaves, trim shrubs, and aerate your lawn to set it up for spring.
- Walkways & driveways – Fill cracks now so winter frost doesn’t make them worse.
Indoors
- Test smoke & CO detectors – Replace batteries to keep your home safe.
- Service your furnace – A quick check-up keeps it running efficiently when you need it most.
- Flip ceiling fans – Switch blades clockwise to circulate warm air downwards.
- Seal drafts – Check doors and windows for leaks and add weatherstripping as needed.
- Fireplace & chimney – Get them cleaned and inspected before lighting the first fire.
Extra Prep
- Stock up on winter basics: salt, shovels, furnace filters.
- Add a few cozy touches—warm blankets, candles, and autumn décor can make your home feel welcoming.
Taking care of these small tasks now means more peace of mind when the snow starts to fall.
