b-LOG: The Worst Way to Save $2,000

We see it all the time. A lovely kitchen with shaker style cabinetry along with wide plank hardwood flooring has been installed through the main floor. In an effort to save a bit of money (or to assert their position as the resident home renovator), the owners decide to install their own trim and doors.

They rent the appropriate tools from the local hardware store. They look at the various trim options and make their decision. Everything is shaping up nicely as work is ready to begin. 45 degree corners, a few thousand brad nails, a tube (or 11) of caulking and off we go!

Here is the thing though. Trim is ruthless. It doesn’t care who the installer is. If they don’t know what they’re doing, it will show. Kind of like when a friend assures you they can sing and then lays waste to the crowd at the local karaoke bar. Sometimes you just need to tell them to stop.

(…no offence to you karaokists out there!)

Back to the trim and baseboards. Soon the renovator has discovered that maybe the corners of their home aren’t square. And the long wall of their living room will require a few seams in the baseboard. Not to mention the area around a door jamb where the corners zig zag 2 inches at a time.

The end result? When it comes time to sell, the potential buyers walk through the home and get distracted. Instead of admiring the beautiful flooring, they lose focus and get hung up on the detail work of the trim.

So rather than save a few thousand on the labour of hiring someone to do the work, the homeowners have instead cost themselves more than that. Why? The buyer is going to essentially penalize them now that (in the buyer’s mind) they have to go out and replace the existing baseboards.

The same applies to a lot of the ‘smaller jobs’ that tempt us into thinking it can’t be that difficult to pull off. Baseboards, trim, laminate flooring, ceramic tile, decks, painting and drywall all fit into this category.

$2,000 saved quickly becomes reduced buyer interest and less money offered.
